Alphabet Catch Up.

Posted on October 18, 2009

We are still chugging our way through a letter a week, but Chloe has started rebelling.  She doesn’t want to dress in the costumes, and play the games, and do the projects.  I think I was just trying to do TOO much.  I would be like, “hey lets dress you like a kitty!”  and she was like, “NO I DON”T WANT TO BE  KITTY!” and then go into the corner and cry.  I told myself that if she stopped having fun with this, and it was more like work, than we would slow down.  So we have.  We do two maybe three activities for each letter, but that’s it.  She’s a lot happier, and a lot more cooperative that way.

So, here are H, J, K and L.  Sorry for the abbreviated post, but I was never going to get caught up any other way.

Big H, little h, what begins with H?

Big G, little g, What begins with G?

Posted on September 3, 2009

This one didn’t go as well as our other themes.

Problem #1:  I was going to hold a “Ghostly Gala.”  But, when we got back from Colorado, we had loads of stuff to do, including finishing up paper work for preschool, signing her up for ballet, then buying the requreired outfit for ballet, then unpacking, washing then repacking for Boston.  Wich meant, G got a bit rushed.  And our friend who was going to lend us a “ghost” outfit discovered the costume had been destroyed by her sister-in-law.  Now, all of this is obviously an excuse.  It would have been relatively easy for me to create a Ghost costume out of white sheet.  However, we don’t have any extra sheets, and I honestly just ran out of time.

Not to mention that our “recipe” for this letter was going to be “Ghostly Green Granola.”  Strike that, make it “Green Granola” because if you don’t cut the granola while it is still warm, it is impossible to cut it into ghostly shapes.  We ended up with “ghastly green granola” which, sadly, none of us want to eat.

Be that as it may, here is G:

Then we played festival games.  We played “Fairy Find” where I wrapped up all of her toys that start with “F” and hid them around the room and she had to find them.  And “Fairy Ball” where we used her Tinker Bell beach ball and a bat.

We also made a Fairy F…F…Friend:

A Fairy Wand:

And we made a Fairy Fish.  (Okay, I really made the fish.  She tried, but the glue wouldn’t dry, so I finally had to pull out the hot glue gun.)

Big D, little d, What begins with D?

Posted on August 13, 2009

I kind of struggled with this one.  My intention with this project is to not only teach Chloe the sounds of the letters, but I wanted, with each letter, for her to get an opportunity to build the letter out of some kind of food.  (Its a pre-writing skill.)  The only thing I could come up with was “donuts.”  And trust me, we did eat some this week.  But I was afraid of making them, only because I also wanted her to be involved with the food preparation.  And, frying dough doesn’t seem like the best idea for a three year old.  I mean, sure, we could make a D out of pre-made donuts, but where’s the fun in that?  So, I was discussing my plight with one of my friends and she told me about “dirt.”  Made with oreo cookies, chocolate pudding, and gummy worms.  I was like, “AWESOME.”  And here you go:

Step 1:  Make pudding.  (Make sure you designate someone as “quality control.”  She tested the ingredients as we went.)

Step 2:  Pour pudding into a flat dish.

Step 3:  crush oreo cookies with a hammer.  I also put the cookies in a ziploc bag to minimize the mess!

Step 4:  Scoop the cookies onto the pudding.

Step 5 and 6:  Draw an “D” using chocolate syrup, then have child put gummy bugs onto the outline.

The finished “Dirt”:

We did several other “D” related projects this week, including making d..d..dog puppets, coloring wooden d..d..dolphins, and d..d..decorating d’s with d..d..dots (pictures in the gallery.)  My favorite (and Chloe’s) was I pulled out Tabitha’s dinosaur costume (she wore it when she was Chloe’s age for Halloween.  My mom sent it to us last year for Halloween, but Chloe was WAY to small for it, so we lent it to a friend.  She is finally big enough for it!)  She has worn it for an hour or two EVERY day this week.  So, I wouldn’t be too terribly surprised if she is a dinosaur for Halloween!  We will let her decide, but Daddy and I may encourage her to be one.  I mean, how cute is this?

C…c…cake!

Step 1:  Mix the ingredients.

Step 2:  Poor into pan.  If you don’t have a bundt pan (which after 3 years being a house wife, I am REALLY surprised I don’t own one) a circular pan with a glass in the middle works just fine.  I put a little bit of water in the glass, too.

Step 3:  Entertain the child while the C…c…cake is c…c…cooking by painting a c…c…crocodile.

Step 5:  Sprinkle with c…c…candy.

Step 6:  Add the C…c…crazy c…c…curly c…c…candles.  (We just happened to have these from a previous birthday.)

Step 7:  Sing “Happy ‘C’ Day” then blow out the candles.

Step 8:  Eat.  (Forgot to take a picture of her eating.  Oops.)
