To boldly go where no toddler has gone before…

Today we started on Chloe’s “Space” unit. It was moderately impulsive, as in I hadn’t planned on starting it today. I have, however, been gathering materials for some time now. However, I hadn’t gotten around to buying any books on space. As luck would have it, Chloe picked two Little Einstein’s episodes, both dealing with space, to watch today. I though, “Well, why not.” And away we go.
First of all, I am AMAZED on how much she already knew! I started showing her pictures I printed off of the computer, and she could tell me what planets, stars, meteors and astronauts were. I had her practice saying the names of the planets, and then we colored and cut out the pictures.
Then I put some watered down white paint into a spray bottle, and Chloe made her “space.”
We taped the pictures onto it.
Then we sounded out the word SPACE and put the letters on a header sheet. I tried to explain what “Constellations” were, and I gave her some stars to make her own constellation. However, I should have provided a picture of this for her, cause she really didn’t get it.
The finished mural:
As luck would have it, The Franklin is doing a Star Trek Exhibition. So, when were done reading all the space books, watching all the space movies, doing all the space arts and crafts, and rudimentary science experiments (all of which I will attempt to do a much better job of planning) we will check it out. I am totally psyched, and hopefully Chloe will dig it, too.
