The Historian

by Elizbeth Kostova.   (4 stars)

The multigenerational search for Vlad the Impaler’s (AKA: Dracula) tomb.  John made fun of me for this one.  But, it was a DENSE novel full of Eastern European history.  And, yes, there were a few vampires, but there were also intrigues, puzzles, mysteries and a touch of romance.

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn’t an easy read.  The historical perspective was fascinating, but complicated and difficult to wade through.  The characters were smart, but seemed to lack compassion, and in essence, they were a little cold.  Whatever the characters were lacking, the mysteries surrounding Vlad’s tomb more than made up for it.  The “goth” in me really wanted to believe this was a true story.

So, I would recommend it, but give yourself several long, quite, uninterrupted hours to read it.

Poor deprived child.

Timing is everything in this business.  I just happened to be on line when one of the ladies from the mom’s club posted that she was selling her son’s train table, track, cars and all, for $25.  Needless to say, I just couldn’t resist.  These suckers start at $100 in the store.  Chloe of course loves it.
Poor kid, she doesn’t have anything to play with!

“Apples on the tree”

Posted on September 19, 2008

We went apple picking yesterday with the mom’s club.  Chloe learned that apples grow on trees, and she kept saying it over, and over, and over on the car ride home.  Luckily, the orchard was only about 5 minutes from my house.  John makes an awesome apple pie, and I gotta tell ya, I just CAN’T WAIT!   You can all be jealous of me now.

As per usual.  Check my gallery for more pictures.

Just in case you thought I was lying…

Awhile ago, I wrote a post about how when Chloe doesn’t want to go to sleep, she doesn’t throw a fit like most children.  Instead, she quietly turns her lights back on, sits in her glider, and reads books.  We tried taking the reading lamp away, which was the only light in her room she could turn on.  Well, she’s grown a bit and can now turn on her floor lamp.  However, she still has to stand on the base of the floor lamp to reach the pull chord, which is a hazard in itself.  I just couldn’t comprehend us saying goodnight to her, and then unplugging and taking the only light source out of her room every night.  (We live in an old house, we don’t have over head lights in the bedrooms.) Our other option was to take all the books out of her room.  And, let’s face it, I would rather take the lamps away.  So, I put the reading lamp back, because if she is going to turn her lights back on, I would rather she did it safely.

Tonight, after both John and I went up to put her back in bed multiple times, I finally decided to bring the camera up with me.  This is what we see when we open her bedroom door.

Chloe said, “Mommy, happy?”

I had to hide my smile and say, “No, Chloe, Mommy wants you to stay in bed!”

I have to admit, when she saw I was holding a camera, she automatically smiled.
